Splitting basic cable, one to the HDTV box and the other to the coax input: Has anyone done this?
An answer to one of my earlier questions was to run the cable from the wall to a splitter, and run one output to the HDTV cable box (hooking up the HDTV cable box to my HDTV via HDMI cable), and hooking up the other output to the regular coax input on the back of the TV. (The point was to have the basic cable AND the HDTV both available.) We have COMCAST, and the local channels, when broadcast in HDTV, are apparently not "passed through" for viewing with basic cable as they are with some cable companies. So, has anyone ever actually TRIED this remedy? It sounds quite feasible, and so before I get the cable guy back out to the house, I thought I would ask.
You should get the basic channels through your HDTV box. The HDTV channels are probably in the 200 series. The local analog feeds and cable channels are 2-99.
Over the straight through connection, you won't get the 100+ series channels. These channels are sent digitally and converted to an analog format.
I would not run the cable to a splitter and put one end into my TV coax connection. If anything, I would connect an antenna. You may actually get some digital subchannels that the cable company does not carry. Plus digital TV over the air is better than cable. Cable compresses the data stream.
