Do I need an HDMI cable to properly display a 16:9 aspect ratio on an HDTV?

Just bought a new 32" LG 780p HDTV for the bedroom but am having trouble displaying the full picture on the TV. The TV is only showing the full picture in a letterbox mode, where there is a black bar above and below the picture. In normal mode, the picture takes up the full screen, but the left and right sides are cut off. Both the HD DVR receiver and the TV itself are set to a 16:9 aspect ratio. I can't find any other display options on the DVR box or the TV itself. My only other suspicion as to the problem is that the cable connects using a standard coaxial cable, versus a new HDMI cable. Would this prevent me from being able to properly display the 16:9 aspect ratio on the new TV?
correction, 720p. This issue is occurring when watching programming that is broadcast in a 16:9 format, and views fine on our other HDTV.

I don't know what HD DVR system you have but you need to use either component video or HDMI if you wnat to see high def on this TV.
