I have a Dell Studio 1558 laptop. It's decked out w/ Core i7, all the best. One MAJOR problem. 1 USB 2.0 port.?
If I use a docking station (I have x3 1.0 TB external hard drives,) will that potentially "burn up" the one USB 2.0 port?
I saw a VERY nice and safe (as-in brand loyalty, I trust it as I'm in the software field) extender that can house everything for me.
The bottom line question is this: If I add and add to the ONE port, can I harm it or is it all the same, as-in if I just put a USB mouse to it?
OR, should I consolidate, get ONE USB 3.0 (I have another port for that) 4.0TB external drive, then use my mouse + flash drive (or whatever) via USB 2.0 on the right-hand side?
I could use some expert advice.
I'm very worried about NOT having Plug-N-Play ability, as I do NOT own any USB 3.0 or eSATA-friendly equipment yet. It's got an HDMI port, but that only allows me to see my laptop view on my television...
Thanks, all!
Do your external drives have their own power cords? If so, then they can share the USB 2.0 port without a problem. Otherwise, your USB hub must it's own power supply for you to use more than one portable (non-powered) drive. USB ports in a laptop or desktop supply enough power to run a single portable drive, but they can't handle multiple high drain devices such as disks via an unpowered USB hub.
Mice and flash drives pull much less power, so you can usually put 4-5 of those on a single port. Portable drives and chargers for ipods and phones pull the maximum current a USB 2.0 port provides.
A USB 3.0 drive on that USB 3.0 port would be much faster, however. That can be very significant if you're moving files in the multi GB range.
