Home theater receiver with HDMI switching?
I'm looking at buying a home theater receiver and have what may be a dumb question, but I cannot seem to find an answer elsewhere.
I want HDMI input(s) and output on the receiver and see that receivers that have them say "HDMI switching".
Does this simply act as a video switch then? Or does it also pull the audio from the HDMI so you can play it on the speakers?
For example, if I plug a blu ray player to a "HDMI switching" receiver, which is plugged into a tv, will I be able to use the surround sound for watching the movie? Or will it simply pass everything for the tv to handle?
Thanks in advance, 10point to best answer!
HDMI switching means just what it says, that the receiver has multiple inputs for HDMI devices and can act as a switch between them, choosing which device's audio and video should be played back. Any receiver that has multiple HDMI inputs will always support HDMI switching, it would not make sense to not include that feature.
Now there are still HDMI switching receivers being sold that may not decode HDMI audio, they pass both the HDMI video and audio through to the TV, so the only way to hear surround sound from those receivers is to also connect a digital audio cable (optical or coaxial).
Fortunately those "pass through" receivers are becoming less common. To simplify connections and to hear the best quality audio, make sure you get a receiver that has HDMI inputs/switching and ALSO decodes HD audio formats (DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD).
To add to the confusion, some new receivers that support 3D over HDMI are called "3D pass through", but in this case "pass through" is a benefit. It means that the receiver will allow full 3D video to be sent to the TV, but the audio will be decoded for surround playback instead of just passing it to the TV. I prefer when they use the term "3D ready" instead, because of the confusion associated with the use of the older "pass through" term.
