Help configuring home theater sound...?
Heres my video connections: Going to my TV via HDMI are HD DVR box and XBOX 360 w/ HD DVD player. Going to my TV via component cables is a wii.
My outdated audio receiver has one coaxial, one ir, and one composite input. I have the coaxial input running from the HD DVR. My ipod docking station is connected via composite. I previously had my old DVD player conencted via ir. Worked perfectly for my needs.
I am having a problem finding a way to connect the XBOX so I receive digital surround sound. The XBOX 360 does not have a digital output audio source (other than HDMI.. correct me if I am wrong). My TV however has an IR digital out. I connected the receiver to this expecting to get the XBOX to pass through this and got nothing. Shouldn't this work? Any suggestions other than upgrading to HDMI pass through receiver? Not the time of year to be buying myself expensive presents... actually it is that time of year, but have already over done it!
By "ir" do you mean optical? If so the Xbox HDMI cable has an optical/RCA adapter that allows the audio portion of the HDMI signal to be split out and connected to an optical (ir?) port. Similar adapters can be purchased elsewhere but the authentic XBox cable is not unreasonably priced.
But note that most TVs won't directly support surround sound ... you would be better to connect the XBox to the receiver not the TV. If necessary you can buy an optical switch to allow more than one device to input to the single input on your receiver (See 2nd link for one model) or buy an HDMI switch if you want to be more "future proof" (See 3rd link)
