Connect Sony Laptop with HDMI (and VGA but not DVI) to Sony 23" Cinema HD display (DVI only) at 1920 x 1200
I want to connect my new Sony Laptop, and use my Apple Cinema Display 23" (1920 x 1200 native resolution & DVI only) as a second monitor.
My laptop is a VGNFZ28G (with HDMI & VGA, and an NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GS GPU).
Can i simply use an HDMI-DVI adapter to extend my display onto my monitor at its native resolution? Are there any side effects?
I was also looking at a Belkin dock, but this can only put out DVI at 1600 x 1200 (not the 1920 x 1200 i'm after) - are there any other solutions for this resolution?
with the right connectors and such there should be no problem as long as u don't let the graphics card overheat. Laptops overheat faster than desktops, so that could very quickly become a problem. monitor the graphics card temperature through updated geforce drivers. laptops are made to have a second display, but watch the temperature on the graphics card. i've seen people run into well over 90 degrees celcius, but i adivse closing down when u reach close to 90 degrees. over 90 degrees geforce can cause hardware problems later. error on safe side, unless u're overclocking u're card, especially since it's a laptop be careful, but u should have no problems whatsoer. Looking at the Berklin dock's website, if u experience is minor heating problems then that seems like a solution. If it doesn't work at all, then i don't think the Berklin dock will solve u're problems. Depends what u want to use it for too... Give the adapter a try first, see what happens. U can check out this website too for further techinal help http://www.tomshardware.com/us I'm not the laptop guru you really want, but am very desktop fixing.. but i do own both... the worst that happens from an adapter is a crash, or a blank screen, or endless beeping at startup all reverable when u unplug the second monitor. Laptops were meant to be displayed elsewhere (years of college hook-up nightmares) i just worry about overloading a laptop graphics card which is not meant to live up to standards of a desktop graphics card.
