Would it get audio from my Mac Mini if I use a mini dvi to hdmi cable?
I was thinking of getting Apple TV when my friend put me off paying over £200 a device to watch movies and etc. So am thinking of a second hand Mac Mini and use that instead using Front row. As you know I will have a lot more features plus I can watch my existing DVD's on it, but what about the audio? I also want that to run through my TV as well and not through a second source i.e. Hi-Fi. I have found a cable mini dvi to hdmi and want to know have any of you guys got a Mac Mini set up this way or have seen it set up this way if so does the audio come through?
Thank you for your time and your answers.
DVI and HDMI are very closely related, however one of the big differences between them is that DVI has no sound channel. That means if you've got DVI at one end of the cable you need another route for the audio.
It will depend on your television, but I believe it would be unlikely that your television will cater for both HDMI input and a parallel audio input. Worst, if you did go the external amplifier route you might find that you need a reasonably high end amplifier. Unlike analogue systems, audio and video may take noticeable time to travel from source to target, so you need a mechanism to syncrhonise them (which high end AV amps provide).
A better solution might be to just burn what you want to watch onto DVD or to invest in something like a Western Digital TV Media Player.
