DVI-I duel link to HDMI Cable (PC to TV)?
Im going to be getting a cable to go from my pc (DVI-I Duel link) to my TV (HDMI) to send hi-def video (I know DVI doesn't send audio) at around 5 meters long.
Thing is, its hard to find a DVI-I Duel link to HDMI but there are lots of DVI-D cables doing the same job.
♦Is it possible to use DVI-D instead? I mean, is DVI-I Duel link backward compatible with DVI-D?
♦If not, are there any reputable UK online cable dealers that can supply a [DVI-I duel link] to hdmi cable?
Thanks
First of all, DVI-I (single-link and dual-link) connectors are only found in computer graphics cards terminals and nowhere else (the "I" stands for integrated, which means the device can transmit both analog and digital signals, but not both at the same time). Such connectors are never found on DVI cable ends (they are either DVI-D single-link or DVI-D dual-link). DVI-D is digital, as is HDMI (as opposed to analog, which is DVI-A, a connector typically only seen in DVI-to-VGA adapters for older monitors).
I'll assume the DVI signal you want to transmit is digital (DVI-D), since that's what HDMI is.
I personally have never seen any DVI dual-link to HDMI cables before. DVI to HDMI cables are all single-link on the DVI end. And the highest resolution for single-link DVI is 1920×1200 (the 16:10 equivalent of 1080p). So that's why you won't find any dual-link DVI to HDMI cables.
You've got the idea on one thing: using dual-link DVI (whose highest resolution is 2560×1600) would greatly reduce the chance of interference, picture flicker, quality loss, etc. (The bigger the funnel, the greater the flow.)
Here's what I think you should do: get a male-to-male/double-headed HDMI cable and a DVI (dual-link) male to HDMI female adapter as opposed to a DVI-to-HDMI cable. That way, when you want to connect an HDMI device to an HDMI television, you'll already have the cable and won't need the adapter anymore. HDMI itself has a higher bandwidth than dual-link DVI and it can also transmit audio with the right device.
Depending on how old (or new) your graphics card is, it may have already come with a DVI-to-HDMI adapter. My EVGA GTX 260 that I got only about a month ago came with a dual-link one.
I don't think DVI can transmit audio at all. My graphics card came with a cable claiming to be some sort of S/PDIF cable. Haven't figured out its use yet, so I could be wrong. I personally have never known DVI to transmit audio (single-link or dual-link). I just run cables from the terminals on my sound card to the audio inputs on the TV and it works just fine.
As far as brands of HDMI cables and DVI-to-HDMI adapters go, they're all the same quality. Don't waste your money on some Monster Cable (or any other designer cable brand) that costs like $70 or more. Get an inexpensive one. Check out the HDMI cables at Monoprice.com. They got a ton of choices and they will not rip you off. I got a 10-footer for less than $10 (that number INCLUDES shipping). And Newegg.com has an HDMI to DVI (dual-link) adapter for $6 (before shipping).
Hope this helps.
