What is the difference between linear pcm and bitstream on my PS3?
I am using a hdmi cable and the optical digital output for sound. I switch the sound back and forth between the two. Does anyone know what the best settings are for this system?
Well to be using an optical output for sound, you must have a receiver. If you do, you should be using the HDMI cable for both audio and video. Optical will only give you 5.1 channel compressed surround sound. HDMI will give you 7.1 uncompressed surround sound.
The general rule of thumb is that if you're using HDMI, do Linear PCM (uncompressed). If you're using optical, use bitstream (compressed).
And if you don't know the difference between compressed and uncompressed audio :
compressed usually has a bit rate of 500-1000kbps
uncompressed has a bit rate of 5-30mbps
thats a 10-60 times increase in quality.
