How to connect PC to TV?

Sorry for my lack of technical knowledge!

I have a netbook with a 15pin VGA socket - and I'm wanting to connect it to my TV - which has HDMI ports. I asked in Currys yesterday, and the guy said I didn't need the HDMI port on the telly, just the RGB/PC slot on the telly (identical to the one on my netbook) and a cable to connect the audio?

Can someone just verify what I need to connect my netbook to TV? Thanks!

The safest answer IMHO is to actually ask a friend who is technically minded to visit your home and take a look at the TV & PC for you.

There are a variety of different ways to accomplish what you are asking. Each requires a different solution and will produce a different result.

Example 1:
PC with Windows XP or higher
Connect to TV using 15-pin D connector ro 15-pin D connector
Set up PC to use TV as 2nd monitor
Sound pumped through stereo lead into back of TV DIN connector

Example 2:
PC with Windows XP or higher
Connect to TV using S-VHS connector
Set up PC to use TV as 2nd monitor
Sound pumped through stereo lead into back of TV DIN connector

My PC has a S-VHS adaptor on the display card. It was supplied with a small adaptor to convert the pin connector to a DIN connector, allowing me to plug into a TV via this method as well. You might have such a connector on you notebook.

Another solution might be to purchase a flat screen monitor to plug into you notebook. Many of them currently have 15-Pin connects and HDMI connectors, thus making them a safer purchase for future developments. A good 28" monitor will set you back between £200-£300.

New Laptops with built in HDMI connectors can also pump the sound through the HDMI lead.
