Wall mount for a bookcase?
I just put together a five shelf bookcase. Included with it was a wall mount kit to "ensure against tipping". Problem is, they left out directions on how to put it together and use it! It has one approx.inch long screw, one approx. 1/4" screw, a half inch long grooved, screw like plastic piece with a slit running lengthwise thru it and one approx. 1 1/2 inch long, semi rectangular shaped piece with 2 holes in it. Any one know what to do? and/or is it that necessary? or would it be ok without it?
Bringing it back for directions won't help, they were clearly just left out of the booklet...it just say "we've included a wall mount set for safety" in the direction book....like I should just KNOW how to use it! grrr
Um, I wouldn't trust that to keep a bookcase against a wall in an earthquake, or to keep a case from tipping over when a two year old decides it's a ladder.
What you're describing sounds a lot like the sort of gizmo (plastic wall anchor) you'd use to hang a lightweight picture on a drywall wall.
If you're in a seismically stable part of the world, the case is placed so it can't hurt anyone if it tips over, and you don't have little kids or drunks, it may be fine without anti-tip devices.
Consider a couple shims under the front legs, though. Over time and load, book cases tend to lean out from the wall a bit.
If it's not, you're going to need something a bit sturdier, and how sturdy will depend on the design of the cases. I personally prefer a french cleat system such as kitchen cabinets are mounted with. The cleat on the wall *must* be secured to wall studs, and I tend to over do the fastener strength a bit.
